Cancer Update
At the end of March I went to the hospital for a CAT scan to check my lymph nodes and other ovary. i brought my mom along to hang out with Ryker while i was in the scan which was a good thing because i ended up having to drink some contrast thing for an hour and a half before the scan actually happened and it was nice to have someone to talk to as talking to Ryker is somewhat one sided ( he is becoming quite the little talker though! if only i knew what he was saying!) anyways I drink this clear liquid that looks like water but definetley did not taste like water.. i may have spilt a whole cup on the floor i'm such a klutz!) then i go into the scan room where they poke me some more and i get an IV and put on a table and fed through a donut like contraption, when they injected me with the contrast my whole body got really warm and it felt like i had peed my pants i was so embarrassed but good news it was a false alarm! haha so we went back to the Tom Baker center a week later and when they brought me into the room the nurse says to me " so you are here to sign your consent?" and i freaked out! consent for what?! i was here for results! what are you talking about?! i asked her while trying not to panic.. she just looked at me and says well .. i don't know; lets wait to talk to your doctor. I hadn't been nervous about the whole cancer thing until that moment. Everything had been so positive and i had felt so calm like everything was going to be okay. When the my doctor came in the first thing she said was everything looked great on the scan PHEW! instant relief rushed over me and i was sooo glad! they did find a slightly enlarged node in my chest but nothing to worry about so i go for another PET(a scan to look at my cell division) and CAT scan (to compare to the last one) at the end of May just to make sure nothing is coming back! i'm pretty excited that everything is okay and i can put this whole cancer thing behind me. Now i can concentrate on being a mom ( my new favorite thing to do these days:P) Going through this experience has brought me closer to my Heavenly Father; just like trials are supposed to do. I love my little family and am so excited to be healthy again!!I am so blessed and i thank you for all of your prayers, they were definetley felt!

17...
17... the number of days since the Dr. diagnosed me with ovarian cancer...
stats say that 1 in 4 people get some type of cancer in their life time.. I never thought i would be that 1.
I have had very mixed feelings about my diagnosis. I feel healthy; not like someone who had a solid 2 pound cancerous tumor removed from their ovary just a month ago, but at the same time I feel worried that I wont be able to have more kids. Symptoms of ovarian cancer are bloating, pelvic pain, difficulty eating and frequent urination (might i add i was pregnant at the time?!? ) but I am thankful the Dr's caught it at such an early stage.
The type of Tumor was a germ cell which basically means something went wrong with one of the eggs inside my ovary and it grew into a tumor. Today was my first Dr app at the Tom Baker Cancer Center here in Calgary ( maybe there was a reason we came to Calgary?) It went rather well and my new Dr ( I've had so many lately I really can't keep track) is super nice and genuinely interested in making sure I understand everything. My mom and Blake were able to take the day of school in order to be there for me and for Ryker while they did an exam.
The Dr explained that when they examined my tumor it all seemed to be in tact which is a good as there were no signs of leakage in any of my other organs. There is a 15 % chance that the cancer is in my other ovary as well in which the Dr was very clear they would first consult the fertility specialist to see what would be best for me having more kids in the future which i am very grateful for!
They took blood samples and I'm going in for a CT scan to see if there are any other tumors. Once i receive the results from the tumor markers in the blood and the scan i go back in to discuss what the next step will be weather it be chemo , surgery to look at my lymph nodes or radiation but we will cross that bridge when we come to it. It also could be just check ups meaning the cancer was removed, which i am hoping for.
At this time in my life i take comfort in the gospel. I take comfort in the fact my husband is a worthy priesthood holder and comfort in the blessings he has been able to give me.
I am thankful for Ryker and the miracle baby he is if i wasn't pregnant getting ultrasounds who knows how long it would have been until Dr's caught it.
I am so thankful for my parents and in laws and their support through all of this.
i love my little family and my faith in Heavenly Fathers plan for me and my family has grown alot in the past 17 days.

growth spurt??
my little baby boy is 18 days old today ! yikes! where has time gone?
He is going through his first growth spurt - and my body is sure paying for it!
Just when i was finally getting the hang of a somewhat reasonable breastfeeding schedule, he suddenly changes course and begins eating every hour. And even when he’s done, he still acts like he’s ready to hit the drive-through at McDonald’s. Like i wasn't already struggling to get enough rest or do anything other than feed him, it’s now extra-exhausting to have a newborn who suddenly treats breastfeeding like a 24-7 all-you-can-eat buffet.
All this eating is showing on the scale! he is now a pound heavier then when he left the hospital! hopefully soon enough his hunger pangs will be over, the growth spurt will end, and things will settle back to normal. Until the next baby growth spurt hits, that is...

but the face i get after he's all done eating is totally worth it :)
he is the cutest baby EVER :) i am so blessed!

little ryker james smith
Fair warning : this post is probably going to be SUPER long, more for my benefit as i keep it as a journal of sorts and want to remember as much as i can! feel free to just skim haha i won't be offended.
from this.. to this :)

Well i guess this story starts back at 30 weeks. i went to my routine 2 week Dr app where they take your blood pressure, weight measure your tummy and hear the heart beat. well in the past 2 weeks i hadn't gained any weight but i was measuring 32 weeks instead of 30 and i had measured under until now. so the Dr sent me in for an ultrasound just to see how things were going in there.
Got to the ultrasound place and changed into the ridiculous gown and sat on the table. ultrasounds are nothing like they are in the movie. your husband doesn't get brought in till the very end and you don't get to see everything on the screen; your husband doesn't even get to stand by you, he stands down at my feet and holds my foot for comfort? anyways the tech checked me over left the room, came back in left came back in, brought the radiologist with her and he checked me and told her to do an internal ultrasound.. all while telling me NOTHING i just sat there as all the worst things came to mind.and i was alone as they hadn't brought Blake in. i kept asking them if anything was wrong and they kept saying that they couldn't tell me. Finally the radiologist came back in and explained the baby was fine ( Phew!) but they had found a "tumor" on the outside of my uterus that measured over 13 cm by 11 cm. I just about lost it and all i could say was " WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE GO GET MY HUSBAND>?!?" that is all they could tell me and sent me with an envelope to my Dr for her to explain further. We headed straight to the Dr and she told us that it was most likely a fibroid or a cyst but they weren't exactly sure but were sending me in for a better ultrasound at the foothills hospital. That ultrasound they couldn't tell me much either; but the growth of the baby was right on track and the pelvic mass wasn't causing me pain so i shouldn't worry. I went in for an MRI and they still couldn't tell if it was benign or where exactly it was coming from with baby all squished in there and my organs all moved around.
My Dr explained that the mass could block the exit for little Ryker coming in to the world and we may have to end up with a c section. He scheduled me for surgery on march 15th and talked about inducing me early to ensure i get some recovery time before surgery to remove the mass.
Tuesday February 7th - i head into the Dr's and he examines me and I'm not dilated at all but he could feel the mass start to descend along with the baby. He scheduled me for induction for Friday the 10th 9:30 am... i couldn't believe i was actually going to have this baby!
My mom came up Thursday night to help out and make sure we had everything good to go. We were allowed 2 support people so i chose Blake and her. We headed to the hospital where they put me in the triage rooms which are beds the size of tooth picks and as hard as rock and they prop you up on your hip for hours at a time hooked up to the fetal monitor. The space provided was slim and they would only let 1 person be in there with you at a time so my mom had to wait out in the waiting room. around 10 they came in and gave me a dose of gel to help soften my cervix and the contractions started soon after that. they sent me home and told me to come back at 4;30 or if anything progressed. i came back at 4:30 and my contractions had gotten stronger they checked me and i still had not dilated at all; not wanting to over stimulate my uterus the Dr sent me home and told me to come back at 1030 if things hadn't progressed. i came home ate supper and had a nice hot shower and the contractions seemed to be getting less and further apart.. not pleased with that as i just wanted this baby out! i went in at 1030 and they hooked me to the fetal monitor but the Dr never came to see us. turns out there were 4 emergency c sections and the Dr's were all tied up. i sat on this hard bed while Blake sat on the chair until 2:30 am when the Dr came and gave me another dose of gel monitored me for an hour and sent me back home. the contractions were almost back to back it seemed like i had no time to rest in between and there was little room for Blake to offer any relief of my increasing back pain. I still hadn't dilated and my cervix was long.. NO PROGRESS - those painful contractions seemed to be doing nothing but the baby wasn't stressed so they sent me home and told me to come back at 8 am. i got a little of sleep mostly because i was finally in my own bed but as morning rolled around i could no longer walk through the contractions i ate a granola bar and we headed to the hospital where they put me on the fetal monitor and finally admitted me! They told me i could no longer eat or drink anything and i wished i had eaten more then a granola bar.
They took me to the labour and delivery suite that had a labour ball i could roll back and forth on that seemed to relieve my back pain. They offered me morphine and i took it right away after it being more then 24 hours since the contractions had started. After the morphine i got to sleep and they woke me back up telling me they were going to start an IV just in case as i wasn't progressing. The student tried first and pushed the needle right through the vein and out the other side and kept trying to progress it which hurt worse then the contractions so the other nurse put one in my other hand and i went back to sleep. I hadn't eaten or drank anything in so long my mouth was so dry that i asked the nurse if she could bring me something. She brought me this thing that looked like a sponge sucker and i could dip it in the water and rub it in my mouth just to keep my mouth hydrated. The Dr and students came back in and checked me and i was still at 0. He wasn't my regular Dr but explained that the mass was preventing little Ryker from pushing down on my cervix and that we would have to do a c section and he could remove the mass at the same time if it was safe to do so. Suddenly i was so calm; i knew that that was what had to be done. I signed a paper stating i was okay with it and they got me on some antibiotics and Blake changed into scrubs which were an extra small and he could hardly sit down in them. it was just after 2;30 when they walked me down to the OR and i hugged my mom and held Blake's hand as we went to go have ourselves a baby! Blake had to wait outside as i went in and they explained what was going to happen and they gave me a spinal. i lied on the table with my arms spread out and they inserted a catheter. It was so weird i knew they were touching me and i got the touching sensation i just couldn't feel it. i kept telling my brain to move my toes but nothing was happening it was a weird experience. When they got all set up they brought Blake in and he sat down by my head and before i could even say hi to him the Dr said can you feel that? and he had already started cutting me open haha. Blake said he could see blood dripping on the floor and i could see in the reflection of the lights the outline of what they were doing... i kept trying not to look but they were pretty good at explaining what was going on. He was so crammed in there they had to use the vacuum to get him out. 3:45pm our little Ryker was born and the pressure release as they pulled him out was crazy. They told me they were going to sew up my uterus and then work on removing the mass. Turns out it had wrapped itself around my right ovary so they had to remove it too. Good thing Heavenly Father gave us 2! They asked if i would like to see it and i was so curious i said yes. It was HUGE , bigger then the placenta i might as well have been carrying twins definitely bigger then the 11 cm wide 16 cm long and 11 cm deep that the MRI had shown. I was glad to have it out of me and not have to wait a month and come back in.
They brought little Ryker over to my face as Blake held him and he was so content. it was so crazy to think that he was just with Heavenly Father; oh the things he could tell me. He was beautiful and he has these blue grey eyes that look so much older then a babies eyes.
They wheeled me to the recovery room where they told me he weight 6 pounds 1 ounce when really he weighted 6 pounds 13 ounces which i didn't find out till he was 3 days old and the nurse came to my house. they did a check to see if the spinal was wearing off and tested if i could feel the cold of the ice on different parts of my body. The rules at the peter lougheed are only grand parents and siblings of the babies are allowed to come visit in the post par tum. But the waiting room is between the delivery room and the post par tum room so as they wheel you past you can sneak a peak. The whole family was waiting in the waiting room as they wheeled me past and i tried to hold up little Ryker for them to see.
They brought me to my room and transferred me to my bed. I got a private room i was so happy about that! i stayed in there until Monday night when they sent me home. Ryker was really low on the jaundice scale and my incision seemed to be healing really good. They sent me home with some drugs and my baby and i couldn't be happier!
Being a mom has been challenging. If you know me you know how i love my sleep and coping with next to none this past week has been hard but sooo worth it. Little Ryker is a wonderful baby and is so content. He loves to snuggle and be held and hates being naked; just like me when i was a baby!
He definitely has his dads chin and his hair was quite red when he was born but gets blonder every day.
I love my sweet little family and it is such a privilege and blessing to be a mom!

January Visiting Teaching
So starting tomorrow i will have been on maternity leave for 6 weeks already ; the first 3 weeks didn't count as we were down with family and it was Christmas, but the past 3 weeks have been ever so slow.. I am full term starting Saturday and this little guy could come anytime - and that gets me SO excited!
Anyways, for Christmas I got a bunch of cross stitching stuff and my Mom got me a sewing machine ; I thought actually owning a real live sewing machine was going to turn me into this awesome seamstress. turns out I haven't touched a sewing machine since grade 7 .. and it shows!
With all my spare time I thought I would spend it being crafty and such but instead I spend my time on pinterest hoping I was crafty enough to try all the really cute stuff I find out there. okay not all my time - "blog bouncing" has become my new thing - especially blogs of new moms and their adventures of adapting to a whole new life.
Well this month I was in charge of the lesson for Visiting teaching - might I add I love the ladies I visit teach and I absolutely love my companion Cynthia who just so happens to be from Lethbridge and her husband is a civil engineer and so Colin and Blake share a common interest as well! its always nice to have a couple you can hang out with sometimes the guys get along and not the girls or vice-versa but she is so awesome and is also in Primary with me as well.
The lesson for visiting teaching this month was on visiting teaching and the importance of getting to know the ladies in your ward and not just reading the message and leaving. Before November I had never been visiting teaching before. I was put on a day route but I was always working during the day so my companion just went with out me. So i was super nervous as I felt incompetent ; especially with there being lots of older ladies in our ward that are more visiting teachingly seasoned.. but I got stuck with 3 awesome ladies and its a blast to go and chat and have some meaningful conversation.
I am a visual learner I can't just be told something and remember it; I need to see something so it can jog my memory a little bit. I decided to have a visual aid of some sort to go along with the lesson that I teach every other month . This month I was going to make home made heating pads filled with rice that you can just pop in the microwave ( Blake was super nice one day and made me one out of a pair of his socks - which he insisted had only been worn once or twice.. somehow I thought my visiting teachers wouldn't appreciate the sock gesture as much as I did, but I am grateful for a very thoughtful husband who even though has a whole lot going on always thinks of me and how I'm doing). I incorporated it into the lesson ; that as visiting teachers we can be like that heating pad; if ever they are feeling cold or sad remember we are there for them to warm them up. This may sound cheesy but I was destined to try out my new sewing machine..
here are some pictures of my adventure!

This may sound cheesy but I was destined to try out my new sewing machine..
here are some pictures of my adventure!
so I tried to wind the bobbin but instead of winding it around the bobbin it wound around the post you put the bobbin on.. and I didn't notice.. for quite some time...
I put the rice first in muslin material; which is breathable in hot conditions and seems how these will be going in the microwave I thought it was a very clever idea as I 'd hate for it to catch on fire or something!
( I had heard about muslin material before and I knew it was called muslin but when I went to the fabric store and asked the nice East Indian lady where the Muslim material was... yeah definitely made my list of top 10 most embarrassing things to come out of my mouth. I had to chalk that one up to pregnancy brain she luckily knew what I meant and pointed me to the corner where it just so happens everything was 50% off!)

I then fashioned a nice bag to go around it; slid the rice bag inside and sewed up the top!
I'd say all in all they turned out pretty darn cute!!! after a few not so cute trial runs; I didn't take pictures as I didn't want to document that embarrassing moment in my life - times like these I wish I had my sister in laws sense of creativity and craftiness!

my favorites
So here i am at 34 weeks pregnant. with nothing to do but sew, i sewed all day long ; which is strange because i don't think I've touched a sewing machine since home EC in grade 7.
But being on maternity leave has been really fun; i thought i would just sleep all day but since Blakes' been back to school i get up with him at 6 in the morning ( after uncomfortably "resting my eyes" (as im' not sure how much sleep is actually involved) for about 4-5 hours) to make him breakfast and his lunch and send him off to school, i feel like such a mom already! i can't believe that in nearly 5 weeks i could be a new mom; i am getting anxious to meet him but it will be so weird not being pregnant anymore!
This got me thinking about what my favorite things about pregnancy are and have been.
1. When I told Blake I was pregnant and he just stood there as i hugged him and jumped up and down and he made me take like 3 more tests just to be sure, and when i told him i wanted to tell my mom and he made me wait, and i accidentally ended up telling her over text thinking i was texting him and not my mom.
2. When i heard this little guys heart beat for the first time. that fast paced washing machine sound nearly melted my heart.
3. The first time Blake could feel our son kicking and his little "ooh" sound that he made each time he did get to feel him. Also Blake complaining of heartburn when I'm the one supposed to be getting it, does that mean my baby is going to be bald?
4. Having an excuse at work to get away from my desk for a while because of my urge to go pee every half hour. My incredible ability to put away my whole lunch before 10 am and still be starving.
5. My mom getting to be there for the 4-D ultrasound and how nice my ultrasound tech was - she gave me more videos of my little guy then what i paid for, but i just love to watch him move around!
6. Speaking of moving around... my new favorite thing is to play " guess that body part" he is getting SO strong that at time i feel he is going to burst right through my skin. some how he can kick my ribs and my bladder at the same time! its like jaws when hes moving around in my tummy a ripple here.. then a ripple on the other side.
7. When Blake falls asleep using my tummy as a pillow and the baby continues to kick his face like he knows its Blake and he's telling him to stop snoring.
8. When i sing "I am a child a God" He turns into a kicking machine ; i think he likes that song.
9. His hiccups. Even though they come bang right at 11pm when i am lying down to sleep i love knowing he is there and that constant reminder.
10. The Teenie tiny baby clothes I've already collected; he is going to be so spoiled that's for sure. I'm in love with baby shoes, even though they don't need shows and they will just fall off and you will never have a pair again, i can't help it, they are so cute!! i bought a pair of these monkey slippers , i cant wait to put them on him!!
i just can't wait !!!
just a sneak peak of our family pictures, still waiting for the rest of them!
as you can tell our family really enjoys there red vehicles!
we came home from church on Christmas day and my dad had parked all 4 vehicles on our front lawn ; he's named them and everything.. just a minor obsession :P
